It was another good week for John Lewis in the seven days to August 19 as all departments performed well and the company benefitted from changeable weather.

The impending end of the holiday season and a few sunny days helped it shift more summer clothing, while rainy days continued the process started in the prior week as shoppers decided to get in early with their autumn wardrobe purchases.

Sales overall rose 5.7% to £77.07 million with Fashion directory sales beating that growth rate and turning in a 7.3% uplift. The company said that womenswear rose 14.3% while menswear was up 5% as consumers snapped up late summer markdowns and autumn/winter new-ins.

Home sales did better than many other weeks this year too with a 3% rise as the company said the changing weather encouraged sales of bedding and lighting. It also saw an increase in furniture and flooring sales, presumably as consumers started thinking ‘indoors’ rather than ‘outdoors’ and even getting ready for Christmas.

Meanwhile Electrical and Home Technology sales were up 8.2%. Parents preparing for children going back to school and university helped drive a 13% increase in year-on-year sales of communications technology products such as computers and iPads.
