Adidas for Prada launches A+P Luna Rossa 21 sneaker

Think of it as a marriage that will be consummated at sea.

Adidas and Prada have revealed the latest stage of their style collaboration and this time it is all about the German active sports giant marrying its technological expertise to the design savvy of the Italian fashion marque.

The A+P Luna Rossa 21 shoes

The result is the A+P Luna Rossa 21, designed to be a Superstar sneaker that will be worn by the crew of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. The shoes were inspired by the latest yacht from the brand’s sailing team, the AC75 Luna Rossa, a monohull class with hydrofoils financed largely by Prada.

“Both Prada and Adidas have continually expressed an innate passion for athletic performance. Prada has participated in the oldest trophy in sport, the America’s Cup, for over two decades with the Luna Rossa sailing team; Adidas’ continuous commitment to pioneering sporting innovation and precision technology has also extended to the America’s Cup, as the brand equipped a challenger team between 2005 and 2007,” the house noted in the release.

Prada first competed in the America’s Cup back in 2000, going on to win the Louis Vuitton Cup, which made it the challenger for the final, which it lost to Team New Zealand. Luna Rossa Challenge, to give the Italian racing syndicate its full name, plans to compete for the next America’s Cup, due to be held in spring 2021. For next year’s 36th America’s Cup, the final will be contested by Emirates Team New Zealand and the winner of the challenger’s series, which is now called the Prada Cup.

The A+P Luna Rossa 21 shoes - Adidas/Prada

The new A+P Luna Rossa 21 shoes are inspired both by the racing boat and iconic Prada and Adidas sneakers from the past. Moreover the transparent gel - or hydrophobic E-TPU outer shell – on the sleek, lightweight sneakers suggests an individually custom-molded shoe on an individual foot. The performance-focused shoes will be worn in competition by the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team, though a lifestyle version will be available to the public, priced at 550 euros.

A perforated, soft, synthetic-suede inner saddle accentuates its sailing performance capabilities; while its specially crafted Speed Lacing has been designed to be narrow at the bottom, to prevent tied knots from coming open easily during competition.

The Adidas for Prada A+P Luna Rossa 21 launches globally in a white colorway on Dec. 9 2020, via Prada boutiques and adidas flagship stores worldwide, alongside selected wholesalers. The range is also available via prada.com and adidas.com.

After that, the next stop is Hauraki Gulf in New Zealand when the first race in The Prada Cup Challenger Selection Series begins on January 15, 2021.
