Beth Ditto launches first plus-size collection

Published

Publicly militant against the slimness imperative, pop singer Beth Ditto has put her money where her mouth is. The leader of pop group Gossip has launched into fashion, introducing a plus-size collection with more character than what the market has been offering up to now, in her opinion. The launch of the Spring-Summer 2016 collection, her first, took place this Monday 15th February, simultaneously on her e-store at bethditto.com and at UK department store Selfridges.

The campaign is by Katie Grand and Ezra Petronio - Beth Ditto.

The creation of Ditto's eponymous apparel brand was announced at the end of 2015, with the introduction of a limited edition tee-shirt by her partner in fashion, Jean-Paul Gaultier, who notably featured her in his shows in the past.

The first Beth Ditto collection follows the singer's cosmopolitan inspiration, sometimes retro, sometimes 1990s or punk... It features eleven styles with different print designs: pop motifs such as a red mouth or a make-up kit, as well as op art-inspired images. Notable among them are skin-hugging silk dresses, pencil skirts akin to leggings, gold lamé tops and an embroidered denim jacket.

Though Beth Ditto was surely approached by industry players, she wanted to launch solo, to avoid having to settle for any compromise. "I wanted to create something specifically our own, just for us, made lovingly and with care, and manufactured ethically by a small outfit in the USA, without the participation of any major company," Ditto has explained.
