Bullring owner Hammerson has announced the name of its new non-executive chairman. It's Robert Noel, the former Landsec CEO, who will replace the outgoing David Tyler.

Noel has had a long and successful career in the real estate sector, with plenty of experience at the top of businesses focused on retail property.

That includes time at Great Portland Estates, the firm that owns a raft of properties in London's West End, as well as at Bluewater part-owner Landsec. He left his role of CEO at Landsec in March after eight years. Noel is also a Trustee of the Natural History Museum.

It’s unclear at present exactly when he’ll join, presumably due to non-compete issues with Landsec. But he will be on board by October 1, at which point Tyler will stop down.

Recognising the fact that the property sector is under immense pressure at present, the incoming chairman said: “The retail property sector is going through a period of unprecedented upheaval, but I look forward very much to helping the company steer through the challenges it is currently facing and capitalise on the significant opportunities ahead.”

Separately, the company also announced that Desmond (Des) de Beer will join its board as a non-executive director with immediate effect. He’s also a non-executive director of property company Lighthouse Capital that has a 15.1 % shareholding in Hammerson.
