Issa Rae announced on her Instagram page on Tuesday morning that she is the newest spokesperson for CoverGirl cosmetics. The announcement comes shortly after the finale of the second season of Rae’s HBO show, Insecure.

“My character is ever-evolving, and makeup is a tool to help transform my persona – whether for a role I play in content that I produce, or the different roles I take on in my life,” Rae said in a statement. “Becoming a CoverGirl means a lot because the brand recognizes just how important it is for people to embrace their individuality and express themselves in unique and diverse ways. This has been a major part of my personal journey, and a message that I want to share with others.”

Rae developed a following for her YouTube series Awkward Black Girl before creating Insecure for HBO. Her HBO series has earned praise for its portrayal of black women in their 20s and 30s.

More mainstream makeup brands have signed on spokespeople of color to appear more inclusive, including Almay’s recent announcement of Rashida Jones as its new ambassador. CoverGirl has regularly used black celebrities to endorse its products, including Zendaya, Rihanna and Queen Latifah, who has her own line for the brand.
