Californian jeans label J Brand has teamed up with Japanese designer Kozaburo Akasaka for its latest women’s jeans collaboration. Akasaka, a graduate of London’s Central Saint Martins College of Art and the winner of the LVMH special prize in 2017, is based in New York. The J Brand x Kozaburo capsule collection features five jeans models made by the Californian brand, now owned by the Fast Retailing group, using deadstock denim and jeans from the label’s archives. No new fabrics needed to be purchased to produce this sustainable mini collection.

Each of the items is named after one of the designer’s favourite characters from films, songs and novels: Iris, Mallory, Sapphire, Jolene and Penny Lane.

“This is my first womenswear collaboration. I started from a series of archive items, making them over to give them a new lease of life. I preserved the spirit of these old items, creating new, sustainable versions in typical American jeans style,” said Akasaka.

The jeans come in different cuts, from flared to straight and skinny. The collection is on sale from Thursday on the J Brand e-store and at Barneys New York and Lane Crawford.
