Radley London launches into clothing for first time

Radley London has made a cautious move into the clothing segment with the brand best known for its handbags now offering a small selection of outerwear and other pieces online.

The label is instantly recognisable for both its leathergoods featuring the Scottie dog bag charm and for the quirky nature of some of its limited edition bags (it has just launched a Beano bags collection, for  instance).

But the new clothing offer keeps it fairly classic with the pieces including two quilted coats, two quilted jackets, four Fair Isle sweaters, a poncho and pyjamas. There’s also a selection of scarves and socks, plus a checked Radley blanket.

Premium-level prices start at £25 for a sock set, rising to £79 for the pyjamas, £89 for one of the sweaters, and £150 and £219 for the jackets and coats.

As mentioned, it may be a fairly cautious move into apparel for now, but we’ve already seen with brands such as LK Bennett — which started as a footwear label — how clothing can become an equally important part of the offer.

That said, it doesn’t always work and upscale leathergoods brand Mulberry’s ambitious move into ready-to-wear was later abandoned as it returned to a focus on its more profitable core categories.

As for Radley, on its Instagram account it says the items are just “the first pieces” of its debut clothing collection so it will be interesting to see how this one develops.
