From jealousy and betrayal to dirty tricks, the members of the Gucci family -- whose fashion house is synonymous with the global luxury industry -- don't have much to envy of soap opera characters. In the 1980s, the heirs and successors of Guccio Gucci, who founded the fashion house in Florence in 1921, were tearing each other apart.

On the one hand, Paolo Gucci denounced his father, Aldo Gucci, for tax evasion. On the other hand, Patrizia Reggiani was released from prison in 2013 after spending 18 years behind bars for hiring a hitman to kill her husband, Maurizio Gucci, March 27, 1995, in Milan.

Margot Robbie could be set to join the project in the role of the "black widow," the name given to Patrizia Reggiani by the Italian press. The same character was very nearly played by Angela Jolie in a movie directed by Ridley Scott. Back in 2006, the British filmmaker had plans to bring the Gucci family's dramas to the big screen, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Penelope Cruz in starring roles.

Although the project never came to fruition, it could now be picked up 10 years later by Wong Kar-Wai. The "In the Mood for Love" director isn't the only filmmaker focusing on the dramatic lives of fashion icons. English director Andrew Haigh ("45 Years") is preparing a biopic on designer Alexander McQueen -- who killed himself in 2010 -- starring Jack O'Connell ("Invincible," "Money Monster") in the lead role.

On the small screen, US network FX's "American Crime Story" will delve into the history of the Versace family for its third season, looking into the 1997 murder of the label's founder, Gianni. Lady Gaga, who previously starred in "American Horror Story," is signed up to play the victim's sister, Donatella Versace.
